Step 1: Selecting a general date for your party.

When selecting a date for your party, it's important to consider why you're having the party in the first place...duh. If you're having a Christmas party, you may want to have it in the month of December; a birthday party will probably be around your birthday. A BBQ, probably during summer. Even if you're just having a house party or kegger, you'd probably schedule it for a weekend so the guests can sleep in in the morning.
At this point in the planning process you don't have to have the exact date and time in your head. Ask around to potential invitees for their opinions.
